Artist Statement

I knew I was going to draw a face looking in two directions. Although aware of what was happening, the picture flowed behind my thinking mind and through my hand. Sometimes I follow a plan, and sometimes my work surprises me. Often other objects will insist upon appearing changing the narrative. After some time has passed, I will study a finished piece learning more about its story and more about myself.

Using paint and colored pencils as my current mediums, I create representational and distorted portraits, trees, and still life. Reappearing throughout my pieces are faces, birds, blossoms, seed pods, and pomegranates. These symbols represent humanity, new life, hope, and potential. Inspired by nature and my reverence for the human condition, the intention of my work is to lead viewers to explore the depths of their own stories.
